Real Like Theater was recorded between the fall of 2004 & the summer of 2005 in a rented house on Monroe St. in Madison, WI. The band lived together and transformed the three story residence into a multi-level recording studio; running cable from the basement to the second story control room (which doubled as Blake’s bedroom), to the attic and everywhere in between. It allowed them to record live, connected via headphones throughout the house.

Blake Thomas & The Downtown Brown is: Blake Thomas (guitar, lead vocal, harmonica, banjo), Shauncey Ali (strings, vocals, mandolin), Jeff Bail (bass, vocals), Justin Kunesh (drums), Teddy Pedriana (keys). Guest musicians included John Hasbrouck (slide guitar), Mary Gaines (vocals), Adam Davis (pedal steel), Adam Ollendorff (pedal steel), and the horn section of Red Chemist: Kyle Alban (trumpet), Steve Resnik (trombone), Jack Whitney (tenor saxophone).
